F.A.Q. I am an absolute beginner

Don't panic!
All the best salsa dancers in the world were ,at one point, absolute beginners too!!! (just as much as you are now)

We recommend you read "The Basics of Salsa", an article written by Louise on this site or read through our F.A.Q below

I have no partner. (I'm a man) May I join your lessons? Lucky guy! There are hundreds of ladies out there waiting for a man to invite them to join a dance course. You are too shy? Don't worry. Come and join us. We can solve your problem.
I have no partner. (I'm a lady) May I join your lessons? This should not be a problem if you are an early bird and you sign up as soon as possible. We always keep some places for ladies with no partner, but they are often booked even before the first lesson starts. If you want to join us, call Fitness Zone (+352 29 10 15) and ask if there are places available for ladies without partner. If there are places, go and sign up asap!!!
I have no partner. What happens if I don't like the partner you assign me? We don't assign partners. In fact there are no partners assigned in our lessons. Every five minutes (more or less) we will ask you to change partners. This is very helpful from the pedagogical point of view and very healthy from the social point of view.
It might be helpful and healthy, but I don't want to change my partner!!! We are here to solve problems, not to create them :-) You might have very good reasons to not change your partner. We will respect your decision with no further questions. (But we still think that changing partners is very helpful and healthy)
Do I need special shoes? Are my basket trainers good enough for dancing ? As an absolute beginner it's good enough if you bring confortable shoes that don't slide too much and don't slide too little. Sport shoes are not recommended unless they are very old and have already lost most of their grip. If the salsa virus attacks you and you decide to continue dancing salsa for a while, we recommend you to buy a good pair(s) of dancing shoes. Your feet and your normal shoes will appreciate it. One of the main salsa shoes provider in Luxembourg is SalsaLife. If you want some shoes, quick and clean, please contact service@salsalife.de.
My sense of rhythm is as good as a platypus. Can I dance salsa? [César] Let's put it this way: I'm only 1,70 meters tall. Can I play basketball? Well, actually I did! Not in the Spanish league, not in the provincial league, not even in the secondary school league, but I played regularly with some other friends and I had quite a lot of fun.
My sense of rhythm is as good as a platypus and I don't get your point with your stupid basketball story! Sorry :-( What I mean is: Certainly you can dance salsa!!! At the beginning you will dance it out of beat, but we will try to teach you, step by step, how to find the beat.
How long will it take me to be a good salsa dancer? The definition of "good dancer" is absolutely subjective. You might be satisfied after a few months of lessons (certainly enough to impress the crowd in a friend's wedding). You might want to be confident enough to invite some good dancers when you travel around. You might even want to participate in salsa congresses, with the best salseros from all over the world. Your returns will depend on how much you invest. Do you practise at home what you learn in the lessons? Do you go out dancing?
Go out dancing? You mean dancing in a public place?
I'm too bad! I'm afraid people are making fun of me when I dance!
We perfectly know how you feel. We felt exactly like this when we started dancing. A wise friend of mine once said: "Don't worry. People don't watch beginners. People watch the good dancers!!!!". Wise words.
Again your silly pointless stories...
But I want to be the best dancer in my circle of friends
This is certainly a bad start for a beginner, a worse continuation for an intermediate and the worst end for an advanced dancer. Just compete with yourself. Try to be everyday better than you were the day before. That's all. And then enjoy dancing
What is this Ladies Styling I've heard about? Ladies Styling is about ladies emphasising the movements of the different parts of the body whilst dancing salsa (head, hands, arms, hips, shoulders etc) to visually express the music and to make the steps look even better. Louise gives a series of dedicated ladies styling courses every spring usually between April and July, which are just for ladies and based on the cross body/linear style. But there are also some workshops from time to time so watch out for our email updates! One word of advice: If you are an absolute beginner though its best to wait a while until you've mastered the basic footwork and steps before working on your styling.
